Gregg Baker Asian Art is pleased to return to Masterpiece London in June 2017 with a special exhibition focusing on avant-garde abstract painting from post-war Japan.

This important area of Japanese art had been largely forgotten until recent years, and is currently being rediscovered by art lovers across the globe.

The show will feature works by renowned artists such as Yuichi Inoue, Hisao Domoto, Shiryū Morita and Kokuta Suda in an attempt to introduce the European collector to these important and innovative painters of the mid-twentieth century.

Artists in post war japan faced difficult times and felt the need to break away from the established paintings schools and their constraints. This led to the use of new materials and experimentation as they struggled with a wish to preserve tradition and yet create something new. This need to express feelings relevant to them during difficult times in a country set on modernization led to work which is emotional, ground breaking, and powerful.
