Kobayashi Masakichi (b.1931) was born in Nigata Prefecture and entered the family business of craftsman making iron tea kettles. He later studied metalwork under Hara Naoki (1906 – 1994) before creating his own style. His work was first selected by Nitten (Japan Fine Art Exhibition) in 1964 and he continued to exhibit at this prestigious venue until 1979.

An active artist he was also a member of Gendai Kōgei Bijyutsuka Kyokai (Association of Contemporary Craftsmen Artists), Tokyo Chukinka Kyōkai (Tokyo Metal Artists Association) and Gendai Kōgei Nigata (Contemporary Craft Niigata).
