Ryota Mori was born in Tatebayashi city, Gunma prefecture in 1952. He studied at the Kanazawa College of Art and in 1976, a year before his graduation, he was awarded the best prize at the Gunma young artists biennale, having two of his works purchased by the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma. His works were exhibited at a number of exhibitions starting with the Kankodo gallery, Gunma, in 1980 and at multiple solo shows since 1981. The Henry Moore Grand Prize Exhibition in 1989 at the Hakone Open-Air Museum included his work which eventually entered the permanent collection of the museum. His career as an artist was successful from a young age and much was expected in his later life. However, in 1993, he died in a traffic accident on the way to his new atelier in Mount Akagi at the age of 41.
