The aki no nanagusa (Seven Grasses of Autumn) theme dates to the eight century Manyoshu poetry collection and has continued to be a favourite theme in Japanese art and poetry. As established in the Manyoshu they consisted of hagi (bush clover) , susuki (pampas grass), kuzu (arrowroot), nadeshiko (fringed pink), onimaeshi , fujibakama and kikyo (bellflower).
