Kanō Mitsuo (1903-1970) was born on the island of Awaji. In 1920 he entered the Chinese Ceramic Institute at Daren in China where he devoted himself to studying Chinese ceramics. Having exhibited at the Nitten in 1946, he won the Tokusen prize in 1949, the Hokuto prize in 1953, the Minister of Education Award in 1967 and became a judge in the following year.

He exhibited at many international ceramic exhibitions, such as those in Belgium (1961), Czechoslovakia (1962) and Italy (1964). In 1969 he was commissioned to create objects for the new Imperial Palace.

Examples of the artist’s work can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, and the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.
